Statement in Support of Passing the CR
Two Weeks Before Government Budget Deadline
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for the passage of a continuing resolution (CR).
On the 27th (local time), President Trump wrote on his social media, "We are working with the House and Senate to pass a continuing resolution with no conditions attached," adding, "Let's get it done."
The U.S. government's fiscal year 2025 began last September and lasts for one year, but the U.S. Congress has yet to pass a formal budget. If Congress does not pass a new spending bill by the 14th of next month, the federal government will face a shutdown.
The U.S. bipartisan parties passed a CR before the presidential election last November and then again at the end of the year.
At that time, then-President-elect Trump demanded that the debt ceiling increase be included, and the Republican Party agreed, which triggered a government shutdown crisis. Congress eventually passed the budget without the debt ceiling issue demanded by Trump, but in the process, they missed the deadline by 40 minutes.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson also holds the position that the CR must be passed first this time.
The Republican Party is proceeding with a separate legislative process in the House to comprehensively address the debt ceiling, tax cuts, and government spending reductions, apart from the CR.
