Two Companies Illegally Discharging Wastewater in Daegu Dyeing Industrial Complex Caught... Joint Response Team Conducts Combined Inspection

Daegu City, Seo-gu Office, and Daegu Regional Environmental Office announced on the 28th that they plan to thoroughly crack down on violating companies through a full-scale investigation and cause identification of the recent continuous illegal discharge of wastewater in the dyeing industrial complex through inter-agency cooperation and joint investigations.

The joint response team of the three agencies responded to the red dye wastewater discharge that occurred on the 24th by opening major stormwater and sewage manholes within the industrial complex, selecting suspicious business sites by backtracking points of unauthorized wastewater discharge, and deploying tracking devices to check for legal violations.

As of the 27th, two companies have been caught violating the Water Environment Conservation Act and are scheduled to be administratively sanctioned. A full-scale investigation will also be conducted focusing on wastewater and stormwater/sewage discharge outlets at other suspicious business sites. In addition, a detailed inspection of sewage pipelines will be carried out in cooperation with related organizations such as the Daegu Dyeing Industrial Complex Management Corporation and the Korea Environment Corporation to thoroughly identify the cause.

Meanwhile, contrary to citizens' concerns, the wastewater discharged recently from the dyeing industrial complex is not flowing into rivers but is entirely channeled into the sewage trunk pipeline and then into the sewage treatment plant operated by the Dalseo Stream Office of the Daegu Public Facilities Management Corporation, where it is properly treated. Therefore, it does not adversely affect the water quality of the Dalseo Stream or the Geumho River.

Kwon Osang, Director of the Daegu Environment and Water Resources Bureau, said, “Through a close cooperation system among related agencies, we will track down violating companies to the end, impose administrative sanctions, and file complaints. We will also implement strong preventive measures to strictly prevent the recurrence of wastewater discharge.”
