Ulsan City Health and Environment Research Institute, 2024 Safety Inspection Results of Daily Hygiene Products Confirmed 'Safe'

68 Cases Inspected Including Peak Season Outing Items and Products Used by Vulnerable Groups

The Ulsan City Health and Environment Research Institute announced that all products met the standards and specifications following safety inspections of hygiene products in the region conducted last year.

This inspection primarily targets hygiene products, tools, containers, and packaging?chemical products closely related to daily life that citizens commonly use.

Last year’s inspections covered a total of 68 cases, including 7 cases of hygiene products (▲cleaning agents for vegetable, food utensils, and containers), 47 cases of peak season items for outings (▲toilet paper 17 cases ▲disposable cups 14 cases ▲disposable towels 8 cases ▲disposable paper napkins 6 cases ▲sanitary wet wipes 2 cases), and 14 cases of items used by vulnerable groups (▲disposable diapers for adults and children 9 cases ▲disposable cotton swabs 5 cases).

The inspection items included formaldehyde, methanol, fluorescent brighteners, pH, potassium permanganate consumption, 1-hexene, 1-octene, and heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, chromium, selenium).

As a result, formaldehyde was detected at 23 mg/kg in one adult diaper case, which was within the standard and specification (75 mg/kg). Methanol, fluorescent brighteners, 1-hexene, 1-octene, and heavy metals were either detected in trace amounts or not detected at all, confirming safety.

An institute official stated, “This year, we will continue to ensure the safety of chemical products closely related to daily life by conducting ongoing inspections of hygiene products, especially those expected to see increased consumption during spring outdoor activities and hygiene products vulnerable to non-compliance.”

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety revised the 'Hygiene Products Control Act' last year to systematically manage the safety of oral care products and tattoo dyes. Ahead of the full enforcement of the law on June 14, it is currently collecting opinions to prepare individual standards and specifications according to the revision of the 'Standards and Specifications for Hygiene Products.'

Detailed information on this amendment can be found on the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s official website under ‘Laws/Materials → Legal Information → Legislative/Administrative Notices.’
