Ground and Underground Complex Development Begins in Front of Yonsei University... Creation of 'Youth and Medical' Hub

Feasibility Study for Seongsan-ro Complex Development
Fostering a Youth Startup and Medical Industry Hub

Ground and underground complex development in the Seongsan-ro area in front of Yonsei University in Sinchon is set to begin in earnest. This measure is inevitable due to the establishment of the Western Line light rail and the reorganization of spatial structure following the undergrounding of the Gyeongui Line. This area will be reborn as a youth startup support space and a growth hub for the medical complex industry.

According to Seoul City on the 28th, the city recently launched a feasibility study for complex development on a 42,000㎡ site around 89-4 Sinchon-dong, Seodaemun-gu.

This project involves the complex development of aboveground and underground spaces around Seodaemun Post Office and Severance Hospital. It reflects the need for reorganization due to spatial disconnection caused by Seongsan-ro and the Gyeongui Line aboveground railway, as well as a lack of available development space.

It is also part of the 'Northwest and Northeast New Growth Hub Project' announced by Seoul City last year. At that time, Seoul City presented five development projects: ▲Complex development in the Seongsan-ro area (Seodaemun-gu, 30,451㎡) ▲Creation of a three-dimensional city for the promotion of Wangsimni metropolitan center (Seongdong-gu, 30,000㎡) ▲Construction of Bukhansan Citizen Observatory (Gangbuk-gu, 15,635㎡) ▲Creation of a waterfront cultural hub around Hwikyung Retention Basin (Dongdaemun-gu, 26,000㎡) ▲Nohaero cultural renovation (Nowon-gu, 15,750㎡), with the 'Seongsan-ro complex development' being the largest in scale.

Seoul City plans to connect the upcoming Western Line station and underground space in this area to create a youth startup support space, develop the Severance Hospital area into a growth hub for the medical complex industry, and restructure the aboveground and underground urban spaces. The underground will house a complex space for startup, cultural, and medical-related work. Semiconductor and battery research facilities, as well as spaces for early-stage companies, are planned.

Seoul City will establish detailed development plans and calculate project costs through this service. The completion date is set for 2035.
