Pohang City Joins Hands with Industry, Academia, Research, and Government to Leap Toward a 'Future Clean Energy Hub City'

Industry-Academia-Research-Government Agreement Signed to Promote Development and Industrialization of Future Clean Energy Commercialization Technologies
Mayor Lee Kang-deok: "We Will Secure a Competitive Edge in the Global Energy Market for Future Clean Energy"

Pohang City is accelerating efforts to create new growth engines for securing a leading position in the global energy market based on excellent research infrastructure and a collaboration system among industry, academia, research institutes, and government.

On the 27th, the city held an industry-academia-research-government business agreement ceremony in the city hall's main conference room to promote the "Development and Industrialization of Future Clean Energy Commercialization Technologies."

The agreement ceremony was attended by Mayor Lee Kang-deok, Kim Il-man, Chairperson of the City Council, Yoon Chang-won, Head of the Hydrogen Low-Carbon Research Institute at POSCO Holdings Future Technology Research Institute, Kim Jong-gyu, Vice President for External Affairs at POSTECH, Cho Yoon-seok, Vice President of Handong University, Lee Jun-seok, Director of the Energy Research Center at Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, Park Jae-heon, Deputy Director of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, Bae Young-ho, Director of Pohang Technopark, Lee Hae-ryong, Vice President of Dawonsys, Park Sang-wook, CEO of MKV, Noh Joon-taek, CEO of HMT, and Woo Young-nam, CEO of Humantec.

On this day, the city signed agreements with related organizations and plans to actively promote related projects by strengthening the public-private cooperation network based on the "Accelerated Strategy for Realizing Fusion Energy" announced by the government last year, while linking policies for innovative fusion technology development and infrastructure construction.

At the agreement ceremony, the industry-academia-research-government institutions agreed to ▲ promote cooperative technology development and exchanges ▲ nurture specialized personnel and operate programs in the future clean energy field ▲ mutually support attracting future clean energy research facilities ▲ jointly discover future clean energy commercialization technology development projects and promote national public projects.

Additionally, they plan to mutually cooperate on ▲ R&D investment for infrastructure and startup support and support for global market entry ▲ building networks with excellent research institutions and companies in the global future clean energy field to promote technology exchange and joint research projects.

Pohang already has world-class fusion-specialized research resources and infrastructure, providing favorable conditions for essential research and demonstration for fusion technology commercialization.

Core fusion researchers are stationed at POSTECH, Handong University, and POSTECH, in particular, has been a leader in domestic fusion research, closely collaborating with the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy for a long time, participating in the development of KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) and ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor).

Moreover, Pohang Accelerator Laboratory possesses experience and experts in building large-scale scientific infrastructure, and key facilities necessary for fusion demonstration, such as the Tritium Removal Facility (TRF) in Gyeongbuk Wolseong, nuclear facilities, and Pohang's engineering industry, are concentrated in adjacent areas, creating a systematic environment from research to demonstration.

Based on this excellent infrastructure, the city plans to rapidly apply research outcomes of fusion energy technology to industrial sites, promote the commercialization of new technologies, and foster a fusion energy industry competitive in the future energy market.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, "Through close cooperation among industry, academia, research, and government, Pohang City will take the lead in the commercialization and industrialization of future clean energy technologies to secure a competitive advantage in the global energy market," adding, "We will actively utilize excellent research infrastructure to lead the future energy paradigm and create new industrial opportunities."
