YouTubers who screened a deepfake video combining the faces of President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife at a downtown rally have been booked by the police.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 27th that two YouTubers have been booked on charges of producing and distributing false videos (violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes).
They are accused of screening a deepfake video that sexually disparaged President Yoon and his wife at the May 18 Democracy Square near the rally site in Geumnam-ro, Dong-gu, Gwangju, ahead of a citizens' rally calling for the president's impeachment on the 15th. It was reported that this screening was unrelated to the civic group that organized the rally.
The video creator is reportedly residing overseas, while the person who screened the video lives in Gyeonggi Province. The presidential office filed a complaint against these YouTubers for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, and the police have received the complaint and launched an investigation.
The investigation is being handled by the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, which has jurisdiction over the location where the incident occurred. The police plan to notify the YouTubers to appear after a legal review.
