Chungnam Province announced that Seosan, Dangjin, and Seocheon have been finally selected for the "2025 Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project" hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project aims to revitalize struggling fishing villages by improving their economic and living environments and encouraging the influx of new residents. By 2029, the project will select 300 fishing villages nationwide over five years and provide a total of 3 trillion won in support.
While the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries selected 26 fishing villages nationwide as project sites, Chungnam Province achieved the result of having three cities and counties chosen for the project?ranking just behind Jeonbuk and Gyeongnam?despite having only 4.7% of the nation's fishing port capacity.
Type 1 projects, which focus on establishing fishing village economic platforms, will receive 40 billion won (with 10 billion won in private investment); Type 2 projects, which focus on establishing fishing village living platforms, will receive 10 billion won; and Type 3 projects, which focus on improving safety infrastructure in fishing villages, will receive 5 billion won.
For this year’s selected sites in the province, Dangjin Jangko Port and Seocheon Janghang Port were chosen as Type 1 sites, and Seosan Doseong Port was selected as a Type 3 site. A total project budget of 65 billion won will be invested by 2029.
In the Dangjin Jangko Port area, a total of 30 billion won will be invested, including 13.9 billion won for the construction of the Jangko Port Fisheries Center in connection with a 14 billion won private cruise ship project, 1.6 billion won for the establishment of a marine art gallery, 2 billion won for the construction of a fishermen's community center, and 5.5 billion won for building a parking tower.
At Seocheon Janghang Port, a total of 30 billion won will be invested, including 25.7 billion won for the creation of the Janghang Marine and Fisheries Culture Complex in connection with a 250 billion won private Janghang tourism resort project, 1.2 billion won for the development of waterfront facilities, and 600 million won for the improvement of a walking trail using an abandoned railway site.
At Seosan Doseong Port, which was selected for Type 3, 5 billion won will be invested in constructing a new joint worksite and expanding safety facilities to improve outdated fishing port facilities.
The province expects that, upon completion of the project, it will not only revitalize fishing village communities by creating stable income for local fishermen, but also improve their standard of living and help build sustainable fishing villages.
Jeon Sangwook, Director of the Provincial Department of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "We will do our utmost to successfully promote the Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project and thoroughly prepare for future public offerings, so that we can create fishing villages where people want to live and breathe new life into local fishing communities."
