Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin: "Police Who Fired Live Rounds at Knife-Wielding Attacker Should Not Be Blamed"

"Even if Tasers and Blank Rounds Fail,
Shouldn't Live Ammunition Be Used to Subdue?"

Shin Sang-jin, mayor of Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province, stated on the 26th regarding the incident in which a suspect who attacked a police officer with a weapon in an alley near the Geumnamno 4-ga Station intersection in Dong-gu, Gwangju, was shot and killed by the police officer's live ammunition, "Police officers are also human. I believe they should not be blamed for any wrongdoing."

Mayor Shin shared the article on social media (SNS) and said, "When a violent criminal continuously attacks the police with a weapon, and it is impossible to subdue them even with a taser or warning shots, shouldn't they be subdued with live ammunition?"


He added, "Aren't police officers human too? Wouldn't anyone act the same in such a situation?" and emphasized, "I believe this person should not be blamed for any wrongdoing against the police."


At around 3:10 a.m. that day, near the Geumnamno 4-ga Station intersection in Dong-gu, Gwangju, Sergeant A of the Geumnam Police Substation, Dongbu Police Station, was stabbed twice by B (51) wielding a weapon. Sergeant A used his firearm during the process of subduing B, who was hit by live ammunition and transported to a university hospital but died around 4 a.m.
