Gyeongnam Aerospace National Industrial Complex Sacheon District
Finalized as the Site for the New Headquarters Building
The site for the new headquarters of the Korea Aerospace Agency, which will become the new center of South Korea's aerospace industry, has been finalized.
On the 26th, the Korea Aerospace Agency announced that at the 'Korea Aerospace Agency Headquarters Site Selection Committee' held on December 17 last year, among the three shortlisted candidate sites, the 'Gyeongnam Aerospace National Industrial Complex Sacheon District' was finally selected as the site for the new headquarters building.
The Korea Aerospace Agency plans to complete the new headquarters by 2030 after going through procedures such as establishing the basic architectural plan. This decision is expected to accelerate the creation of the 'Aerospace Complex City,' which will serve as a stepping stone for South Korea to leap into the world's top five space powers.
An official from Sacheon City expressed, "We expect aerospace-related companies, which had many inquiries about the headquarters site decision, to continue moving in," adding, "Early sale of the national industrial complex will greatly help revitalize the local economy."
Local residents and civic groups are also welcoming this decision enthusiastically. One citizen said, "With the confirmation of the Korea Aerospace Agency headquarters site, Sacheon will firmly maintain its position as the mecca of South Korea's aerospace industry," adding, "This marks a new turning point for regional and national development."
Experts predict that this decision will be an important turning point that goes beyond simply selecting a site for a government agency's headquarters and will determine the future of the national aerospace industry. An aerospace expert advised, "It is necessary to create an ecosystem where research and development, talent cultivation, and business promotion can be organically carried out centered around the headquarters."
In the future, close cooperation between the Korea Aerospace Agency and the local community is expected to be key to the successful construction of the headquarters and the development of the Aerospace Complex City.
A Korea Aerospace Agency official stated, "We finalized the candidate site after evaluations by the site selection committee composed of private experts from various fields to select the optimal location. Regarding the headquarters vision, from the planning stage, we will closely harmonize with the local complex city development plan to lead the creation of a world-class ‘Aerospace Complex City.’ We plan to establish major facilities and improve living conditions to successfully promote aerospace industry development and core projects, including various work support and convenience facilities, as well as infrastructure for managing national key aerospace assets."
Park Dongsik, mayor of Sacheon City, said, "It is true that there were many noises and suspicions related to the headquarters site after the opening of the Korea Aerospace Agency in Sacheon. However, now that the site for the new headquarters has been finalized, it is time for our citizens and the people of Gyeongnam Province to unite once again with the goal of early construction of the Aerospace Complex City and South Korea’s entry into the world’s top five space powers. We ask everyone to gather support by signing a petition expressing the wishes of the people of Gyeongnam for the passage of the ‘Special Act on the Construction of the Aerospace Complex City’ in the National Assembly, so that the early construction of the Aerospace Complex City can be achieved." He added, "We hope to achieve the remarkable development of South Korea’s aerospace industry that all citizens desire together."
