The Army announced on the 25th that it held the '60th Graduation and Commissioning Ceremony' at the Army 3rd Military Academy in Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk, presided over by Kim Seon-ho, Acting Minister of National Defense. About 4,000 people, including family members, relatives, the alumni association, and school officials, attended the event.
The 60th cadet class, who graduated and were commissioned as second lieutenants simultaneously, consists of a total of 368 cadets (41 female cadets). They enrolled in 2023 and underwent intensive military training and academic education for two years, earning both a military bachelor's degree and a general bachelor's degree.
The prestigious Presidential Award was presented to Second Lieutenant Lee Sang-hoon (26, Aviation). Lt. Lee said, "As I take my first step as an elite Army officer, I will do my best every moment to become a reliable and trustworthy soldier for the military and the people."
The Prime Minister's Award went to Second Lieutenant Go Byung-chan (24, Aviation), the Minister of National Defense Award to Second Lieutenant Jeon Ho-min (23, Infantry), the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Award to Second Lieutenant Han Ga-eun (F, 23, Intelligence), and the Commander of the Combined Forces Command Award to Second Lieutenant Jeon Woo-won (23, Infantry). Additionally, Second Lieutenants Hong Young-bin (22, Military Police), Lee Hyun-seok (25, Infantry), and Choi Seung-hyuk (23, Infantry) received the Army, Navy, and Air Force Chiefs of Staff Awards respectively, and Second Lieutenant Jeon Hee-jun (23, Infantry) received the Army 3rd Military Academy Commandant Award.
Beyond the awardees, various stories of the new officers drew attention. Second Lieutenants Baek Seung (22, Medical Service), Lee Junho (22, Infantry), Kim Gwan-jung (23, Ordnance), Go Byung-chan (24, Aviation), and Kim Hyun-bin (22, Infantry) are continuing a family tradition of military service spanning three generations. Notably, Second Lieutenant Baek Seung was commissioned as the third-generation officer following his maternal grandfather (3rd Military Academy 1st class) and father (ROTC 32nd class).
There are also new officers who followed their fathers to become alumni of the 3rd Military Academy. The group includes Second Lieutenants Kim Min-seok (24, Intelligence), Lee Hyun-jun (24, Infantry), Choi Yoo-chan (24, Infantry), Jeong Moon-gi (25·Engineer), Ryu Dong-gyun (24·Aviation), Kim Gwan-jung (24·Ordnance), Park Sung-hyun (24·Aviation), Shin Dong-jun (23·Information and Communications), Kim Bo-gyeom (23·Infantry), and Jeong Yun-jae (24·Engineer), totaling 10 officers. Second Lieutenant Ryu Dong-gyun, who was commissioned as an aviation officer and 3rd Military Academy alumnus following his father (3rd Military Academy 34th class) and younger brother (61st class cadet Ryu Dong-yeop), said, "It is an honor and pride to become alumni of the 3rd Military Academy together with my father and brother," adding, "I will do my best to become an officer who contributes to the development of Army aviation."
Additionally, some officers have studied abroad in various countries before entering the academy. Second Lieutenant Son Se-won (F, 25, Infantry) and Second Lieutenant Hwang Jae-hyun (27, Intelligence) studied in Canada, and Second Lieutenant Kim Min-young (F, 23, Infantry) studied in Turkey. Second Lieutenant Lee Joo-won (26, Infantry) studied in the Netherlands, Second Lieutenants Yoon Sang-heum (24, Logistics) and Ham Hoon-gyu (22, Intelligence) studied in the Philippines, and Second Lieutenant Park Ji-gyeom (23, Intelligence) studied in China.
Meanwhile, the commissioned officers will receive new officer command and staff training at their respective branch schools from March to June and will be assigned to field units at the end of June to carry out their duties.
