Medical School Quota Supply and Demand Forecast Committee in Uncertainty... Welfare Committee Subcommittee Cancelled

The subcommittee on bills of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee, which was set to discuss a bill to establish an organization that estimates the appropriate number of doctors, including the quota for medical schools, has been postponed, making the solution to the medical school quota issue uncertain for the time being.

According to political circles on the 24th, the Health and Welfare Committee had originally planned to hold the first subcommittee meeting on the 25th to discuss amendments to the Medical Workforce Support Act and the Framework Act on Health and Medical Services, focusing on the establishment of the "Medical Workforce Supply and Demand Estimation Committee" (Estimation Committee), but the subcommittee schedule was canceled.

Previously, the Health and Welfare Committee held a legislative public hearing on the 14th and then convened the first subcommittee meeting on the 19th to review the bill but failed to reach a conclusion. While the government, National Assembly, and medical community all agree on the necessity of the Estimation Committee, they have differing views on the specific establishment plan.

The government is known to have prepared a revised proposal reflecting many of the medical community's criticisms and demands raised during the public hearing, but with the cancellation of the first subcommittee meeting, it is now unclear whether the bill will pass within this month.
