Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongbuk Province supports 90% of the premiums for crop disaster insurance and farmer safety insurance, and 70% of the premiums for comprehensive agricultural machinery insurance to assist farmers in stable agricultural management and to prepare for damages caused by abnormal weather.
Currently, the subscription rates for crop disaster insurance and farmer safety insurance in Yeongdeok-gun are continuously increasing. Last year, among 2,984 farms in the area that subscribed to crop disaster insurance, 1,546 farms, accounting for 51.8%, received a total of 5.7 billion KRW in insurance payouts and benefited from the coverage.
Accordingly, Yeongdeok-gun plans to reduce the burden on farms by investing a budget of 7.5 billion KRW this year to support three types of insurance: △ crop disaster insurance that protects against damages caused by natural disasters such as typhoons and hail △ farmer safety insurance that covers agricultural work accidents △ comprehensive agricultural machinery insurance, thereby strengthening the safety net for local farmers and encouraging insurance enrollment.
The crops eligible for crop disaster insurance include a total of 68 types such as apples, pears, rice, and facility crops. The subscription period is year-round but varies by crop. Four types of fruit trees?apples, pears, persimmons, and astringent persimmons?can be insured in February; agricultural facilities and facility crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, and spinach can be insured from February to November; and rice can be insured from April to July.
The farmer safety insurance is available to those engaged in agriculture aged 15 to 87 (some products up to 84), and the comprehensive agricultural machinery insurance is available to farmers who own or manage any of 14 types of agricultural machinery. These 14 types include major equipment such as tillers, tractors, and combines, as well as aerial spraying machines (including drones) and agricultural high-altitude work vehicles.
County Governor Kim Gwang-yeol stated, “In preparation for increasing abnormal weather events, we hope that farmers actively enroll in the three agricultural policy insurances to be free from worries about accidents and disasters and focus on farming.”
Farmers wishing to subscribe to insurance can apply by visiting the nearest local Nonghyup branch or the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Apple Nonghyup according to the sales period for each crop.
