"Free Format and Topics for Public Debate" Counter-Proposed
The People Power Party on the 24th counter-proposed to hold a final debate on all current issues in response to Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, who suggested a public debate on tax reform plans including inheritance tax and earned income tax.
Kim Dae-sik, the chief floor spokesperson, told reporters at the National Assembly on the same day, "Leader Lee has been demanding continuous debates with Floor Leader Kwon Seong-dong, and we agree to unlimited one-on-one debates."
Kim, the chief floor spokesperson, said, "The format is free, and the topics are free," adding, "We propose to hold a final debate on all current issues in politics, economy, society, and culture."
Earlier, on the 23rd, Leader Lee shared a post by Democratic Party lawmaker Lim Gwang-hyun, a former deputy commissioner of the National Tax Service, on social media, saying, "(The People Power Party) still clings to ultra-rich tax cuts," and proposed, "If you are truly confident and dignified, stop lying behind the scenes and have a public debate."
At the Supreme Council meeting that day, Leader Lee also criticized the People Power Party, saying, "If you do not cut taxes by 10 billion won for someone inheriting 100 billion won, but refuse to raise the basic deduction and the standard deduction, isn't that bullying?" and added, "I really cannot understand if this is what the ruling party should be doing."
