"No More Blank Checks for the United Nations"

A bill to push for the United States' withdrawal from the United Nations (UN) has been introduced by the US Republican Party.

According to the US Congress on the 23rd (local time), Senator Mike Lee (Republican - Utah) introduced a bill on the 20th to halt the United States' participation in the UN.

The bill aims to repeal the law governing the US's participation in the UN and to stop all financial support to the UN. It also includes provisions to prohibit US participation in UN peacekeeping operations (PKO) and to revoke diplomatic immunity enjoyed by UN officials within the US.

The bill further calls for the withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other UN agreements, and requires Senate approval if the US seeks to rejoin the UN in the future.

Senator Lee stated, "There is no longer a blank check for the UN," adding, "The hard-earned money of Americans has been used for activities that conflict with our values, aid dictators, betray allies, and fuel prejudice."

The bill must pass both the House and Senate and be signed by the President to take effect.

This bill introduction comes as President Donald Trump continues his moves to withdraw from various international organizations and agreements. Since his inauguration last month, President Trump has ordered withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, WHO, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and other UN-affiliated organizations and agreements.
