Combining Traditional Markets with Night Tourism
Boosting the Local Economy Expected
Gumi City in Gyeongbuk will hold the 'Gumi Sweet Romantic Night Market' this year at two locations: Gumi Saemaeul Central Market and Indong Market.
Last year, the Romantic Night Market attracted 270,000 visitors and was a great success. This year, it is expected to welcome tourists with even more diverse sights and activities.
To this end, at the '2025 Gumi Romantic Night Market' steering committee meeting held on the 21st, preparations for the opening, operation plans, and promotional strategies were discussed.
The steering committee consists of 11 members, including traditional market merchant associations, heads of related organizations, and university professors, seeking practical measures to revitalize traditional markets and promote regional economic development.
This year's night market will operate at Saemaeul Central Market every Friday and Saturday from April 25 to May 17, and at Indong Market from May 23 to 24 and May 27 to 31.
In particular, the Indong Market night market is expected to have a significant effect in attracting domestic and international tourists as it coincides with the Asian Athletics Championships.
Among last year's visitors, those in their 20s and 30s accounted for about 40%, and many visitors came not only from nearby areas such as Gimcheon and Chilgok but also from Daegu, Seoul, and Gyeonggi. This year, with the opening of the Daegyeong Line and the hosting of international sports events, even more tourists from outside are expected to visit Gumi.
Kim Jang-ho, mayor of Gumi, said, "By operating the night market in connection with traditional markets, we will revitalize the local commercial district and attract tourists from outside through various programs and events." He added, "We will do our best to establish the Gumi Romantic Night Market as a nationwide attraction."
