Activity- and Play-Based Learning to Enhance Basic Math Skills
Increasing Teacher and Student Engagement for a "No Math Dropouts" School
A Three-Stage Structure: "Think - Do Together - Do by Myself"
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has developed a teaching resource called "First Steps in Mathematical Skills" to enhance basic math skills among lower-grade elementary school students.
According to the Office of Education on the 23rd, the resource was created to help students easily grasp number concepts and naturally develop calculation abilities by incorporating various activities and play elements. It was also developed by reflecting brain science-based mathematics learning theories and the educational expertise of basic academic skills teachers from the Gwangju Dongbu and Seobu Education Support Offices.
The material is structured into three activity stages?"Think," "Do Together," and "Do by Myself"?so that students can learn concepts under the guidance of teachers and then practice repeatedly on their own. In the "Think" stage, students learn concepts; in the "Do Together" stage, they solve problems independently through teachers' explanations and demonstrations. The "Do by Myself" stage encourages students to enjoyably repeat what they have learned through play or games.
Additionally, the "First Steps in Mathematical Skills" resource will be uploaded to the class archive site "Damoda," and there are plans to develop math resources for middle-grade elementary students and conduct teacher training in cooperation with the Basic Academic Skills Support Center at Gwangju National University of Education.
Superintendent Lee Jungseon said, "We will prepare various support measures so that our children can enjoyably develop their mathematical skills."
