KAIST announced on the 21st that Dr. Joo Sooyeon from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has been appointed as the Associate Editor of the publishing development team for Advanced Materials.
Dr. Joo graduated from the KAIST doctoral program this month. She is the first in Korea to be appointed as an associate editor of a world-renowned academic journal immediately upon graduation from a doctoral program.
Founded in 1989, Advanced Materials is a top-tier materials science and engineering journal published by the German publisher Wiley-VCH, primarily covering cutting-edge materials research such as nanomaterials, electronic materials, and biomaterials.
The associate editor of an academic journal plays a key role beyond simply reviewing papers, communicating with researchers worldwide, and coordinating academic trends.
Considering this, KAIST emphasized that Dr. Joo’s appointment as associate editor demonstrates that an important role has been entrusted to a young Korean researcher within the international academic network, while also reflecting the elevated status of Korean researchers on the global stage.
After completing her undergraduate studies at KAIST, Dr. Joo finished an integrated master’s and doctoral program in four years, focusing on data-driven materials analysis techniques and developing characterization and analysis technologies using Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) technology, computer vision, and machine learning.
In particular, during her doctoral program, Dr. Joo participated for six months in research on AI-based microscopy analysis technology at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States.
She has also built academic achievements by publishing five papers as the first author and five papers as a co-author in international journals such as Advanced Science and APL Materials.
Dr. Joo commented, “Through the research experience I gained at KAIST, I will strive to become an associate editor who actively communicates with researchers worldwide and shares more effective research outcomes.”
