An official involved in the alleged hiring corruption case concerning the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education's audit officer has ultimately been arrested.

According to legal sources on the 21st, the Anti-Corruption and Violent Crime Investigation Division of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office arrested an official, identified as A, from the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education on charges including obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means. The court issued a pretrial detention warrant due to concerns over destruction of evidence.

Official A is suspected of exerting external pressure during the hiring process for the audit officer in August 2022, when serving as the head of the personnel team at the city education office.

Previously, the Board of Audit and Inspection reported to the police that A had asked evaluation committee members to alter scores during the hiring process, in which Lee Jungseon, a high school classmate of the superintendent, was appointed as audit officer.

The Board of Audit and Inspection determined that, during the audit, A requested score modifications by telling evaluation committee members, "It would be better if the audit officer were not someone too young." As a result, the ranking of applicants was changed.

After confirming these facts, the Board of Audit and Inspection reported A to the police, and the prosecution took over the case from the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency in September last year and has continued the investigation.
