Yangsan-si 'Cheonseongsan Sunrise Event', Leaps Forward as a Regional Representative Tourism Festival

Evaluation Meeting for the "Cheonseongsan Sunrise Event" Held on the 20th

Yangsan City in Gyeongnam has begun exploring ways to expand the ‘Cheonseongsan Sunrise Event,’ where the first sunrise of the New Year on the Korean Peninsula can be seen, into a representative tourism festival of the region.

On the 20th at 2 p.m., Yangsan City held an evaluation report meeting on the ‘Cheonseongsan Sunrise Event’ held on January 1, 2025, at the city hall’s main conference room.

At the meeting, related to the event’s progress, 10 departments of Yangsan City, along with Yangsan Police Station, Yangsan Fire Station, and the Yangsan Lions Club, which hosted the Citizens’ Safety Prayer Ceremony, attended to discuss the event’s achievements, issues, improvement plans, and future development directions.

Despite being held during the national mourning period following the Jeju Air crash at the end of the year, about 1,600 people visited Cheonseongsan to welcome the first sunrise on the Korean Peninsula, an increase of approximately 28% compared to last year.

This year, positive evaluations were received for enhancing citizens’ convenience through the installation of winter tents, expansion of portable toilets, securing passing lanes on the Cheonseongsan access road, changes to parking lots and shuttle bus boarding locations, additional shuttle bus dispatches, and installation of mobile communication base stations.

On the other hand, issues pointed out for improvement included a lack of parking spaces for visitor vehicles, shuttle bus traffic management, safety management of auxiliary event booths due to strong winds, insufficient guide signs for nighttime location identification, and spectator safety concerns beyond the Cheonseongdae railings and decks.

Attendees agreed that since the scale of the Cheonseongsan Sunrise Event is expanding annually and its domestic recognition is increasing, it should be strengthened with diverse cultural events and other content to leap forward as a representative tourism festival of Yangsan.

Mayor Na Dong-yeon said, “The 2026 Cheonseongsan Sunrise Event will be a signal marking the start of the ‘Year of Visit Yangsan.’ We will invite the Governor of Gyeongnam Province and the Mayor of Sintra, Portugal, an international sister city, to make it a more meaningful event commemorating the 30th anniversary of the city’s elevation and pledging a united Yangsan through communication and harmony.”
