Recruitment of Over 30,000 Participants, Including Patients with Severe Diseases and the General Public
Chonnam National University Hospital (Director Jung Shin) announced on the 20th that it has been selected for the "National Integrated Bio Big Data Construction Project" organized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute.
The National Integrated Bio Big Data Construction Project is a government-led research and development initiative aimed at building an "integrated bio big data" resource for the Korean population.
The project collects personal data such as blood, urine, and tissue samples, clinical information, medical records, data held by public institutions, personally generated health information, genomic and other omics data from participants to establish integrated bio big data in a human-derived biobank (data bank, biobank).
The established infrastructure will be used in various future research areas, including disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment development, realization of precision medicine, public health improvement, and innovation in the bioindustry.
Chonnam National University Hospital has been selected as an institution to recruit patients with severe diseases (12,284 people) and general public participants (19,789 people), and will receive 3.5 billion KRW in funding for about five years until 2028. After obtaining consent from participants, the hospital will collect clinical information and samples.
The research team at Chonnam National University Hospital is led by Professor Ki Seungjeong from the Department of Laboratory Medicine, who is responsible for recruiting patients with severe diseases, and Professor Kim Juntae from the Department of Neurology, who is responsible for recruiting general public participants. The hospital will collaborate with major medical institutions in the Honam region, such as Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital and Jeonbuk National University Hospital, to recruit participants.
Director Jung Shin stated, "We expect this bio big data recruitment project to achieve groundbreaking progress in various fields of medicine," and added, "We will do our best to provide patient-centered medical services and enhance the competitiveness of the global medical industry, thereby contributing to the advancement of Korean healthcare."
