Korea Online News Association Announces Winners of the 2nd Digital Journalism Innovation Awards
Grand Prizes Awarded for "10 Years of the Survivors" and "Hankyung Arte"
Winners Recognized for Excellence in Digital Content and Digital Service & Business
The Korea Online News Association (President Park Hak-yong) announced on the 19th the selection of two winners for the 2nd Digital Journalism Innovation Awards.
In the Digital Content category, the grand prize was awarded to Hankook Ilbo's special project on the 10th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster, titled "10 Years of the Survivors." The recipients include Team Leader Yoo Dae-geun (Special Project Team Leader/Excellence Lab), reporters Jin Dal-rae, Won Da-ra, Jeon Yoo-jin, Seo Hyun-jung, Oh Se-woon (all reporting), photographers Wang Tae-seok, Seo Jae-hoon, Park Si-mon (all photography), planner Park In-hye, designer Han Kyu-min, developers Moon Chan-woong and Lee Jung-jae (both interactive), producers Park Go-eun, Ahn Jae-yong, Lee Soo-yeon, and motion grapher Jeon Se-hee (all video), totaling 17 members.
The grand prize in the Digital Service & Business category was awarded to "Hankyung Arte," which led digital innovation in the cultural and arts sector. The recipients include Manager Kim Dong-yoon, Deputy Managers Park Jong-seo, Kim Bo-ra, Lim Geun-ho, Lee Hae-won, and reporters Koo Eun-seo, Sung Soo-young, Yoo Seung-mok, Shin Yeon-soo, Choi Da-eun, Kim Soo-hyun, Koo Kyo-beom, Ahn Si-wook, and Jo Dong-gyun (all from the Culture Department), totaling 14 members. The Korea Economic Daily managed the entire process of this platform, from planning and production to content preparation, expert recruitment, and collaboration with related organizations.
The Digital Journalism Innovation Awards judging committee evaluated "10 Years of the Survivors" as "delivering the Sewol Ferry incident, which everyone thinks they know but no one knows precisely, in a multidimensional way." They praised the innovative approach of transforming vast data?including interviews with 93 related individuals, investigation and trial records, the Sewol Ferry Investigation Commission's records, and memoirs of victims and perpetrators?into an online-optimized narrative. They also added that "the use of video and interactive content to naturally convey stories at various levels to readers was refreshing."
Regarding "Hankyung Arte," the committee stated, "It demonstrated the coexistence potential of high-quality content and sustainable revenue models in the pure cultural and arts field," adding, "This will be a great inspiration for existing media companies striving for digital transformation." They emphasized, "It is noteworthy that based on a solid digital platform, it is expanding into offline areas such as monthly magazine publication and establishing literary awards."
Professor Yoo Hong-sik of Chung-Ang University, who served as the chair of the judging committee, said, "Each year, high-quality works are being submitted," and added, "We can vividly see the successful digital transformation in both form and content, so the future is even more promising."
Each grand prize winner in the respective categories will receive a plaque and a prize of 5 million won. The awards ceremony will be held on February 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the 19th-floor press conference room of the Korea Press Center in Taepyeong-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul.
In this second edition of the competition, four entries were submitted in the Digital Content category (one of which was transferred to the Digital Service & Business category), and six entries were submitted in the Digital Service & Business category.
