Multiple Cases of Workplace Harassment Confirmed
The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on the 19th that it will initiate a special labor inspection on the Gangwon Academy Foundation (Gangwon High School, Gangwon Middle School), where multiple faculty members have reported workplace harassment. Accordingly, the Gangwon Regional Employment and Labor Office formed a special labor inspection team consisting of 12 members and began on-site inspections of the workplace from that day.
This special labor inspection was conducted after labor inspectors investigated the reports concerning the school foundation and confirmed signs of illegal and unfair harassment by multiple employers, including the chairman of the academy, throughout the organization.
The harassment confirmed so far includes delivering lunch to the chairman’s residence, using annual leave for the chairman’s personal errands followed by driving instructions, and mobilizing teachers for on-campus construction work. The number of victims who suffered from unfair work orders beyond their original duties has reached 15.
The Ministry of Employment plans to thoroughly check for any additional harm to all faculty members beyond what has been confirmed through the special labor inspection. They will focus on assessing the overall organizational culture and violations of labor laws, strictly addressing any legal breaches and guiding to prevent similar cases in the future.
Minister of Employment Kim Moon-soo stated, "Workplace harassment that infringes on the basic human rights of workers must be eradicated," and instructed that the inspection be "conducted strictly and thoroughly."
