'Nonsensical Claims: "Korea is a Thief Country"
Some Insist "Kimchi Originated in China"
Seokyeongdeok Seo: "Severe Inferiority Complex"
On the Chinese version of Instagram, 'Xiaohongshu' (English name Rednote), nonsensical claims such as "Koreans are stealing Chinese culture" are rampant.
Professor Seokyeongdeok of Sungshin Women's University stated on social media (SNS) on the 19th, "After receiving reports from netizens living in China and the United States and examining Xiaohongshu, I confirmed such posts."
Professor Seokyeongdeok reported that some Xiaohongshu users are making baseless claims like "Korea is a thief country." They are spreading posts and videos containing messages such as "Do not trust Korea" and "Kimchi originated in China," which is quite a serious situation.
He expressed concern, saying, "Xiaohongshu has mainly been used within China until now, and most users were Chinese, but with a large influx of American netizens, there is a risk of being brainwashed by such unfounded speculation."
He added, "As Korean culture gains worldwide attention, this behavior can be seen as stemming from the severe inferiority complex of Chinese netizens," and criticized, "We must remember that such distorted Sinocentrism isolates China."
Meanwhile, the Washington Post (WP) reported on the 15th (local time) that U.S. President Donald Trump is considering delaying the enforcement of a law banning the video platform TikTok. It added, "American TikTok users are flocking to Xiaohongshu before the service shutdown," noting that it recently ranked number one in free downloads on the Apple App Store in the U.S. According to WP, American netizens call themselves "TikTok refugees" and post satirical content in English on Xiaohongshu.
