Where is the optimal location for the National AI Computing Center, a core infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) research? Gwangju City will hold a policy forum to discuss securing AI sovereignty through the establishment of the National AI Computing Center and ways to utilize the local AI industry ecosystem.

On the 19th, Gwangju City announced that it will host the "Policy Forum for Securing Global Competitiveness as an AI Innovation Hub" at 2 p.m. on the 20th in the 2nd Small Conference Room of the National Assembly Members' Office Building in Yeouido, Seoul.

This forum is co-hosted by Gwangju City and Representative Cho Incheol, and organized by the AI Industry Convergence Project Group. It will discuss strategies for securing domestic AI sovereignty amid the fierce global competition for AI dominance, as well as the current status and challenges of AI development in Korea. In particular, participants will share opinions on ways to secure global competitiveness by utilizing the "Gwangju AI Cluster," which is emerging as a domestic AI innovation hub.

The forum will begin with a presentation by Bae Kyunghoon, Head of LG AI Research Institute, on "Securing AI Sovereignty and Infrastructure: Cooperation Strategies for Gwangju as an Innovation Hub," followed by a presentation from Yoon Seokjoo, CBO of Persona AI, on "Developing Korean-Style AI Technology through Gwangju AI Infrastructure Support."

This will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by Oh Sangjin, Head of the AI Industry Convergence Project Group. Panelists include Bae Kyunghoon, Head of LG AI Research Institute; Yoon Seokjoo, CBO of Persona AI; Kim Hyuncheol, Director of Future Growth at MBC; Gong Deukjo, Vice Dean of GIST AI Policy and Strategy Graduate School; and Kim Kyungman, Director of AI-Based Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT. They will discuss securing infrastructure for AI sovereignty and the development of large-scale AI models such as generative multimodal AI, as well as cooperation strategies for building the Gwangju AI ecosystem.

About 100 people will attend the forum, including Kang Gijung, Mayor of Gwangju; Representative Cho Incheol; Choi Minhee, Chair of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee; Kim Hyun and Choi Hyungdoo, committee secretaries; Representatives Jung Jinwook, Ahn Dogeol, Jeon Jinsook, and Min Hyungbae; Kim Kyungman, Director of AI-Based Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT; as well as experts and business leaders.

Mayor Kang Gijung said, "Gwangju has better AI infrastructure than any other region. Establishing the National AI Computing Center in Gwangju would be the best choice to rapidly enhance the country's AI capabilities," and added, "I hope this policy forum will present concrete alternatives and pathways to make Gwangju's dream a reality."
