Emphasizing Unity Through the Consolidation of Honam
Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Youngrok met with Joo Cheolhyun, chairman of the Jeonnam Democratic Party, at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 18th to request cooperation at the National Assembly level, including the designation of Yeosu as a preemptive response area for the petrochemical industry crisis and proposals to resolve major issues in the province. Kim Yungrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, visited the National Assembly on the 18th to meet with local lawmakers and others, agreeing to strengthen mutual cooperation on regional issues and the current political situation.
On this day at the National Assembly, Governor Kim held consecutive meetings with Democratic Party Jeon Cheolhyeon, Chairman of the Jeollanam-do Party, Shin Jeonghun, Chairman of the Public Administration and Security Committee, and lawmakers Park Jiwon, Seo Samseok, Lee Gaeho, Kim Woni, Jo Gyewon, Kim Moonsu, Kwon Hyangyeop, and Moon Geumju.
In the meeting with Party Chairman Jeon Cheolhyeon and lawmaker Jo Gyewon, they agreed to actively cooperate on designating the Yeosu petrochemical industry as a preemptive response area for industrial crisis, overcoming the crisis, and establishing a carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) cluster at the Yeosu Industrial Complex to achieve the national goal of carbon neutrality.
Separately from the party chairman, they shared views on uniting the power of Honam to overcome the crisis of insurrection, emphasizing the need to respond to anti-constitutional forces stirring up unrest in the current emergency situation.
In the meeting with Chairman Shin Jeonghun, they discussed creating new growth engines by transferring significant central government authority to local governments to overcome the crisis of regional extinction, hosting a legislative hearing for the Jeonnam Special Self-Governing Province Special Act, and reviewing and passing the bill in the subcommittee.
With lawmaker Park Jiwon, they discussed the lack of a comprehensive support system for basic research and production and processing technology development in the seaweed industry compared to the size of the food industry. They agreed to join forces to establish the National Seaweed Industry Promotion Agency, a dedicated organization to support the development of high-quality seeds, production, distribution, and export.
In meetings with lawmakers Seo Samseok, Lee Gaeho, Kim Moonsu, Kwon Hyangyeop, and Moon Geumju, they agreed to push for the integration of Mokpo National University and Suncheon National University and to cooperate in establishing a new national medical school based on the integrated university to serve as the command center for essential and public healthcare in the region through a grand compromise between the government and the medical community.
They are hoping that, ahead of the discussion on the 2026 medical school enrollment quota, the new national medical school in Jeonnam will be given the top priority with an allocation of 200 students.
With lawmaker Kim Woni, they agreed to work together to designate the Shinan Offshore Wind Power Cluster (3.2GW) to attract the offshore wind power ecosystem.
