Sisters Were Standing in the Yellow Safety Zone After Crossing the First Lane
A sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a drunk driver hit two sisters who were standing in a safety zone, resulting in one death and one serious injury.
According to the Boryeong Police Station in Chungnam on the 18th, the SUV struck the two sisters standing in the middle safety zone of a three-way intersection road in Songhak-ri, Jugyo-myeon, Boryeong City, around 9 p.m. the previous day.
As a result of the accident, the older sister (in her 80s) was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but passed away. The younger sister (in her 70s) was also seriously injured and is receiving treatment at the hospital.
The SUV, which was making a right turn at the three-way intersection with two lanes in each direction, failed to turn and went straight, causing the accident. According to the police, there was no crosswalk at the accident site, but the sisters were standing in the yellow safety zone after crossing the first lane.
The police explained that the blood alcohol concentration of the SUV driver measured at the scene was not at the license suspension level (0.03%). The police have booked the SUV driver for drunk driving without detention and plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident.
Meanwhile, on a road in Yeomchi-eup, Asan City, at 11:21 p.m. the previous day, a vehicle driven by A (in their 30s) crashed into a protective guardrail and caught fire, but the fire was quickly extinguished. The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, suspecting that the driver was also driving under the influence of alcohol.
