"No to Character Assassination and Premature Collective Lynching"
Lee Gi-in, Senior Supreme Council Member of the Reform New Party, criticized the slander directed at the late actress Kim Sae-ron (25) while mourning her sudden passing.
On the 17th, Lee posted on social media (SNS), "Kim has passed away. The first thing that came to mind was the Bible verse, 'Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.'" He continued, "I am not trying to justify every move Kim made in the past," adding, "I am talking about the grief and despair we feel now, and the sense that something is going terribly wrong."
He went on, "We are becoming worse. We think we stand on the side of justice, wielding spears and mercilessly stabbing our targets," and pointed out, "If you believe you are on the side of justice, it does not matter how much your methods exceed public boundaries or how cruel they are." He said, "The 'exhumation' directed at each other has become a daily routine; we expose and expose again, relentlessly chasing down and crushing the target. And no one stops it."
Lee said, "The responsibility for this madness does not lie with any particular political faction. The whole society, whenever able to attack the other, has carelessly wielded spears at each other." He also stated, "Giving a second chance even to those who have committed heinous acts, refraining from character assassination, and avoiding premature collective lynching?these were values our society tried to uphold just a few years ago," emphasizing, "We must return to the principles we sought to protect. We must now stop this hellish spectacle."
He added, "If someone has committed a wrongdoing, the law will punish them," and said, "Easily raising spears under the pretense of setting them right can never be justice. I hope this suffocating hell train will be brought to a halt."
Meanwhile, Kim was found dead at 4:54 p.m. the previous day at her home in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. Her funeral was held at Funeral Hall 7 of Seoul Asan Medical Center in Songpa-gu, Seoul. The funeral procession is scheduled for 6:20 a.m. on the 19th.
