Changes in Learning Methods and Preference for Convenience Drive eBook Demand
Annual Growth Exceeds 50 Percent
Specialized eBook Textbook Platforms Emerge
Recently, it has been confirmed that the usage of electronic textbooks among university students is increasing by more than 50% annually.
According to an analysis by Kyobo Bookstore's eBook business team, while sales of paper textbooks and employment/exam preparation books are declining, eBook sales have surged sharply, with increases of 12% in 2022, 55% in 2023, and 51% in 2024. In particular, the order ratio of eBooks compared to paper books for university textbooks rose from 2.1% in 2022 to 5.6% in 2024.
The popularity of university textbook eBooks is closely related to changes in students' learning methods. As learning using smart devices has become widespread, demand for eBooks, which can be conveniently accessed anytime and anywhere, is increasing. Features such as search functions, note-taking and highlighting, and synchronization are gaining attention.
The growth of the eBook market is also influencing strategic changes among publishers and bookstore platforms. Currently, major bookstore distributors such as Kyobo Bookstore, Yes24, and Aladin, as well as university textbook specialized publishers like Hakjisa, Pakyoungsa, and Hanbit Academy, operate their own eBook platforms. Specialized textbook platforms have also emerged.
Kyobo Bookstore is also improving its eBook operations. Starting in 2025, it plans to build a university- and department-specific textbook database and operate a separate textbook showcase. Additionally, it will enhance note-taking features and apply synchronization functions. Kyobo Bookstore expects that the activation of eBook textbooks will reduce illegal copying practices and contribute to creating a proper copyright usage environment.
The growth of the university textbook eBook market is expected to continue. The Kyobo Bookstore eBook business team stated, “As the learning environment for university students shifts to digital, demand for eBooks is rapidly increasing,” and added, “Kyobo Bookstore plans to support students in more easily utilizing eBooks by adding various features focused on customer convenience and operating a dedicated MD.”
