MOU Signed for Seaweed Land-based Aquaculture Project
Collaboration on Developing Seaweed Aquaculture Technology and Fostering the Industry
CJ CheilJedang announced on the 17th that it has signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Selection of Seaweed Seed Production and Land-based Aquaculture Project' with Jeollanam-do Province and Haenam County. With Jeollanam-do accounting for about 80% of the nation's seaweed production, Haenam as a representative seaweed production area, and CJ CheilJedang's technology developing land-based aquaculture techniques, it is expected that the pace of seaweed land-based aquaculture will accelerate.

The signing ceremony took place at Haenam County Office, attended by Nam Kyunghwa, CJ CheilJedang Global Category Research Manager (Business Leader), Myeong Hyungwan, Haenam County Governor, Park Youngchae, Director of Jeollanam-do Marine Fisheries Bureau, and other officials.
This agreement was established to successfully promote the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' '2025 Sustainable High-Quality Seaweed Seed Production and Land-based Aquaculture Technology Development Project.' The government announced that it will support a total of 35 billion KRW over five years until 2029 to develop technology capable of producing high-quality seaweed on land through this project.
CJ CheilJedang, Jeollanam-do, and Haenam County will form a consortium to cooperate in developing seaweed-related technologies, fostering the seaweed industry, and promoting the distribution and activation of seaweed products. The consortium plans to conduct joint research for seaweed seed development and aquaculture commercialization, mutual research on high-quality seaweed seeds for product commercialization, and cooperate in purchasing, distributing, and promoting sales of raw materials and commercial products produced through national projects.
Through this MOU, CJ CheilJedang aims to contribute to regional development and achieve mutual growth with Haenam County to globalize Korean seaweed. CJ CheilJedang was the first in the industry to start developing land-based seaweed aquaculture technology in 2018, succeeded in tank cultivation in 2021, and secured a dedicated variety for the first time domestically the following year. CJ CheilJedang will continue to develop innovative technologies in collaboration with academia, including Incheon National University and Jeju National University.
