"Not Presidential Material"... Lee Jun-seok Tops Unfavorable List of Next Presidential Candidates

Lee Jae-myung Dominates Both Ruling and Opposition Parties in "Presidential Candidate Support"

A public opinion poll revealed that among major politicians considered as potential presidential candidates, Rep. Lee Jun-seok of the Reform New Party had the highest proportion of respondents who said they would “absolutely not support” him as a presidential candidate.


Polling firm Gallup Korea released the results of a survey conducted from the 11th to the 13th of last month, targeting 1,004 voters nationwide.


The survey was conducted via telephone interviews using randomly selected wireless phone virtual numbers (CATI), with a response rate of 16.1%. The confidence level was 95%, with a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points.


The results showed that 45% of respondents expressed unfavorable views toward Rep. Lee, narrowly surpassing Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, who had 41%, ranking first. Only Rep. Lee and Leader Lee received over 40% unfavorable responses in this survey.

Following them were former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon (37%), Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo (36%), Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo (33%), and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon (30%).


In terms of respondents who said they “actively support” a candidate as a presidential prospect, Leader Lee recorded 26%, overwhelmingly surpassing Minister Kim (12%), Mayor Oh (6%), Mayor Hong (5%), and Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon (3%), among other key politicians from both opposition and ruling parties.


Regarding preferred future political leaders, Leader Lee was highest at 34%, followed by Minister Kim at 12%. Former leader Han, Mayor Hong, and Mayor Oh each recorded 5%. Rep. Lee, former Reform New Party leader Cho Guk, and Governor Kim each received only 1%.


Party support was recorded at 39% for the People Power Party and 38% for the Democratic Party of Korea. Compared to the previous survey (January 21?23), support for the People Power Party rose by 1 percentage point, while support for the Democratic Party fell by 2 percentage points.


Following them were the Reform New Party at 4% and the Reform New Party at 2%, with 16% of respondents identifying as non-affiliated.
