Safety Notice Regarding Strengthened Immigration Policies
On the 15th, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States posted a safety notice on its website containing important information for Koreans in light of the Trump administration's recent crackdown on illegal immigrants.
The embassy urged Koreans residing in the U.S. for study, work, visits, travel, or other reasons to check the validity of their visas and to promptly renew them if they are about to expire.
It also advised Koreans traveling or staying in the U.S. to always carry valid documents that prove their legal status and to prepare contact information for emergency assistance.
Additionally, the embassy emphasized the importance of being cautious about minor legal violations. Since U.S. immigration enforcement focuses on criminal records, even those legally residing in the U.S. should be careful not to lose their residency status due to legal violations such as drunk driving.
The embassy particularly warned international students staying in the U.S. on student visas (F-1) that engaging in illegal employment or labor activities can be considered a serious immigration violation if caught.
In case of arrest or detention by U.S. authorities, Koreans have the right to consular visits from the Republic of Korea and may request such visits if desired. If consular assistance is needed, they should contact the nearest Korean consulate general or consular office in their area.
