"System Improvements Including CCTV Installation Issues"
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho stated on the 14th regarding the case of elementary school student Kim Ha-neul from Daejeon who was killed by a teacher, "We will definitely establish fundamental measures to prevent a second Ha-neul from emerging."
During the government questioning session at the National Assembly that afternoon, in response to a question from Kim Jong-yang of the People Power Party, Deputy Prime Minister Lee said, "I feel a heavy sense of responsibility as something truly unacceptable happened at a school that should be the safest place."
He also plans to initiate improvements to related laws concerning teachers and strengthen student safety measures. Deputy Prime Minister Lee explained, "For teachers who have mental difficulties that interfere with their duties, urgent measures such as separation, suspension from position, and improvements to leave and reinstatement procedures seem extremely urgent," adding, "We plan to promptly revise the 'Ha-neul Act' through consultations with both ruling and opposition parties, including these matters."
He promised, "Taking this incident as an opportunity, we will also ensure smooth progress in institutional improvements regarding overall school safety, such as safety management for students participating in after-school care and the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV)."
Deputy Prime Minister Lee added, "A thorough investigation is currently underway, and the Ministry of Education will soon begin an audit of the Daejeon Office of Education," stating, "We plan to thoroughly investigate the facts and responsibilities through the investigation."
