Four Sectors Including Residential, Transportation, Infrastructure, and Regional Specialization
Seven Projects to Be Implemented
Seosan City in Chungnam Province will invest a total project cost of 30 billion KRW over four years, from this year to 2028, to establish comprehensive hydrogen-related infrastructure and lead the hydrogen economy era.
Seosan City announced that it was selected as a third-phase hydrogen city by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport last September, securing 15 billion KRW in national funds and 4.5 billion KRW in provincial funds out of the total project budget of 30 billion KRW.
The project will be carried out in four sectors?residential, transportation, infrastructure, and regional specialization?with seven detailed initiatives, aiming to establish a comprehensive hydrogen city that covers all processes from hydrogen energy production to utilization.
In the residential sector, the city will install a 440 kW fuel cell to supply electricity and heat to residential and public facilities, along with heat piping and buffer tanks as auxiliary equipment around the fuel cell.
Additionally, four tube trailers will be operated to supply hydrogen.
In the transportation sector, the city plans to distribute six hydrogen buses and six hydrogen-powered cleaning vehicles to expand hydrogen mobility, thereby promoting eco-friendly transportation and reducing carbon emissions in urban areas.
For infrastructure, about 2 km of hydrogen pipelines will be constructed to supply byproduct hydrogen from the main gate hydrogen production facility at Lotte Chemical to the Energy Super Station.
In the regional specialization sector, modular UAM hydrogen charging infrastructure will be established within the Bio-Wellbeing Research Zone, and a 1 MW-class water electrolysis facility linked with solar power will be installed to enhance the eco-friendliness of hydrogen production.
Furthermore, a 440 kW fuel cell will be installed in a smart farm to support energy self-sufficiency in agriculture.
This year, the city will establish a master plan to specify the hydrogen city project, conduct detailed design in the first half of 2026, and begin full-scale construction in the second half of 2026.
Mayor Lee Wanseop of Seosan stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure that Seosan City becomes a key hub of the hydrogen economy through this hydrogen city project," adding, "We will lay the foundation for improving the quality of life for local residents and a sustainable future."
