Pyeongtaek City Selects 'Eunsan 1-ri, Jinwi-myeon' as Candidate Site for Comprehensive Funeral Facility

On the 14th, Pyeongtaek City announced that Eunsan 1-ri village in Jinwi-myeon was selected as the first successful candidate in the document screening for the public comprehensive funeral facility construction site in Pyeongtaek.

During the re-announcement held for one month starting from December last year, Yanggyo 6-ri in Oseong-myeon and Manho-ri in Poseung-eup, including Eunsan 1-ri, applied for hosting. The city explained that after reviewing the document screening, Eunsan 1-ri was the only place that received consent from more than 60% of household heads registered in the resident registration. The city plans to finalize the construction site in May after conducting a site feasibility study and an on-site inspection by the construction promotion committee for the applied sites.

A city official said, "Concerns such as traffic, environment, and land price decline in the surrounding areas of the applicant sites will be collected through briefing sessions, and we will promote the creation of funeral facilities that coexist with the local community."

However, the journey for the re-announcement of the funeral facility is also expected to be challenging. On the same day in the morning, the Emergency Countermeasures Committee against the funeral facility, composed of nearby residents from Eunsan 2, 3, 4, and 5-ri, held a rally in front of the city hall main building, opposing the process by demanding, "Immediately withdraw the recruitment procedure conducted without sufficient resident opinion gathering."

The committee claimed that the city did not consider the administrative district complexity of the surrounding area of the planned site during the recruitment process and lacked sufficient briefing and opinion collection procedures before the announcement. They also pointed out that the recruitment was conducted solely based on the consent of residents in the specific area, excluding residents of the surrounding areas.

Previously, Pyeongtaek City had already experienced failure in selecting a candidate site for the comprehensive funeral facility once last year. From September to November last year, a three-month recruitment was conducted, and although two villages applied, no qualified applicants were selected due to incomplete related documents.

Meanwhile, through this re-announcement, the city plans to provide up to 5 billion KRW in resident support projects and grant operation rights for ancillary facilities such as restaurants, stores, and cafes, as well as provide jobs to the area hosting the comprehensive funeral facility.

For areas within 1 km from the boundary of the comprehensive funeral facility installation site, 10 billion KRW will be allocated for resident support projects, and 5 billion KRW will be provided for long-awaited projects in the corresponding eup, myeon, or dong where the hosting area belongs. Even areas that applied but were not selected will receive 300 million KRW for village long-awaited projects as a gesture of consolation and harmony among residents.
