Trump: "Resolve trade deficit and imbalance with India... Increase arms sales to billions of dollars"

According to CNN and Reuters on the 13th, President Trump said at a joint press conference after meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, "Prime Minister Modi said that India will reduce its unfair and high tariffs that restrict the U.S. from entering the Indian market."

President Trump pointed out that the U.S. trade deficit with India amounts to nearly $100 billion (approximately 144.32 trillion KRW), adding, "India imposes tariffs of 30-70% on many products, making it almost impossible to sell cars in India."

He also mentioned plans to increase U.S. arms sales to India. He stated that the U.S. plans to increase arms sales to India by billions of dollars and is "paving the way to supply F35 stealth fighter jets."

Trump revealed plans for India to purchase more U.S. oil as well. He said, "We have more oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) than any other country in the world, and by selling that to India, we can offset the deficit," adding, "Prime Minister Modi and I have reached an important agreement to restore the U.S. as a major supplier of oil and gas to India."

He also announced plans to establish a new trade route from India to the U.S. President Trump said, "We have agreed to build the greatest trade route in history," explaining, "It will be connected through ports, railroads, and undersea cables from India, passing through Venezuela and Italy, all the way to the U.S."

Regarding the Quad (the security consultative group consisting of the U.S., Japan, Australia, and India), he reaffirmed that "it is key to maintaining peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region."

On the same day, Prime Minister Modi likened the U.S.-India relationship to President Trump's inauguration slogan 'MAGA' (Make America Great Again) by changing it to 'MIGA' (Make India Great Again).

Modi said, "To borrow the American expression, our vision for a developed India is to make India great again, or MIGA (Make India Great Again)," adding, "If the U.S. and India come together, adding MIGA to MAGA creates a grand partnership for prosperity."
