In his inaugural speech, President Kwak said, "The 2·28 Democratic Movement, the first democratization movement in the Republic of Korea, has reached its 65th anniversary. The 2·28 Movement is not a bygone history but the living and breathing 'Daegu Spirit.' We will also strengthen education to cultivate a proper sense of national identity and foster growth as free democratic citizens through nurturing the spirit of 2·28 among the youth. We will do our best not only to inherit and develop the historical value and patriotic spirit of the 2·28 Democratic Movement but also to legally and institutionally organize and supplement the Commemoration Association for its development."
