Improvement of Yeongsan Elementary School Children's Protection Zone
Installation of Pedestrian Walkway on Yeongsan Gugae Road
On the 13th, Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam announced that it has completed two pedestrian environment improvement projects in the Yeongsan-myeon area to ensure children's traffic safety and provide a pleasant walking environment for pedestrians.
This project includes the improvement of the Yeongsan Elementary School Children's Protection Zone on County Road No. 10 and the installation of a pedestrian walkway on Gugae Road in Yeongsan, aimed at securing pedestrian safety and preventing traffic accidents.
Since the child fatality accident that occurred in the Yeongsan Elementary School Children's Protection Zone in October 2022, Changnyeong-gun has prioritized pedestrian environment improvement as a key administrative task and has been continuously promoting intersection improvements and separation of sidewalks and roads.
The Children's Protection Zone improvement project involves the maintenance of intersections and school routes (L=270m, 700 million KRW). Despite the concentration of schools and academy facilities such as Yeongsan Elementary and High Schools, the walking path had not been secured. Since students commuted via side roads, they were constantly exposed to the risk of traffic accidents. Therefore, after several public hearings and working-level consultations with educational institutions (Office of Education, Yeongsan Elementary, Yeongsan High School, etc.), a sidewalk was installed on school grounds for free use.
The Gugae Road pedestrian walkway installation project (L=1.69 km, 1.437 billion KRW) has been a long-standing wish of Yeongsan residents. It involves installing a pedestrian walkway along a frequently used walking course from the Yeongsan Seokbinggo area to the entrance of Gugae Village. With the completion of this project, a walkway has been installed, securing pedestrian safety and improving the walking environment.
Additionally, the county is currently promoting pedestrian walkway installation projects between Hyanggyo in Changnyeong-eup and Hari Village (L=800m, 300 million KRW), between Musol Intersection in Daehap-myeon and Upo Nonghyup (L=200m, 250 million KRW), and the improvement project of the Children's Protection Zone at Ibang Elementary School (L=170m, 220 million KRW).
County Governor Seong Nak-in stated, “We will continue to expand traffic safety facilities and improve the walking environment so that residents can move safely and conveniently.”
