On the 13th, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 33 (Presiding Judge Kim Dong-hyun) sentenced former special prosecutor Park to 7 years in prison and a fine of 500 million won on charges of violating the Specific Economic Crimes Act (bribery, etc.). Additionally, a confiscation of 150 million won was ordered. Previously, at the closing arguments, the prosecution had requested a 12-year prison sentence, a fine of 1.6 billion won, and confiscation of 1.75 billion won.
Former special prosecutor Park was indicted last August on charges of receiving 800 million won in bribes in exchange for promising real estate worth approximately 20 billion won from private consortium members related to the Daejang-dong development project, in collusion with former special prosecutor aide Yang Jae-sik, while serving as an outside director, chairman of the board, and audit committee member at Woori Bank from 2014 to 2015. He is also accused of receiving 50 million won and later being promised 5 billion won from Kim Man-bae, a major shareholder of Hwacheon Daeyu, a media-affiliated figure, in exchange for obtaining a letter of intent for a loan worth approximately 150 billion won from Woori Bank.
Regarding former special prosecutor Park, only the charge of receiving 300 million won from Nam Wook, a private businessman involved in Daejang-dong, under the pretext of election funds for the president of the Korean Bar Association was recognized as guilty.
The court did not recognize the charges that former special prosecutor Park had agreed to receive 5 billion won and actually received 500 million won as a bribe for assisting in the issuance of the letter of intent for the Woori Bank loan, nor the charge of receiving 1.1 billion won through his daughter who worked at Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management, where Kim is a major shareholder.
Yang, the former special prosecutor aide who was indicted alongside Park, was sentenced to 5 years in prison, fined 300 million won, and ordered to pay 150 million won in confiscation. The prosecution had requested 7 years in prison, a fine of 600 million won, and confiscation of 150 million won.
