Strong Criticism of Kwon Seong-dong's Remarks
People Power Party Changed Its Name from United Future Party in 2020
Kim Min-seok, a Supreme Council Member of the Democratic Party of Korea who had predicted that President Yoon Suk-yeol would declare martial law, has now forecasted that "just as a dog betrayed its owner before the third crow, the People Power Party will ultimately reject Yoon Suk-yeol within 100 days and soon change its signboard." On the 12th, Kim made this remark during a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, referring to the speech by Kwon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, who blamed the Democratic Party led by Lee Jae-myung the previous day. Kim described it as "a conservative ruling party's dirge showing that President Yoon Suk-yeol's blame-shifting DNA has become the identity of the People Power Party."

Earlier, on the 11th, Floor Leader Kwon strongly criticized the Democratic Party, which had proposed 23 special prosecutor laws and 29 impeachment motions during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, calling them "instigators of national crisis" and stating, "There has never been an opposition party like this in our constitutional history or in any country in the world." In response to Kwon’s remarks, Kim said, "Conservative ruling parties without genuine reflection, apology, vision, and messages of hope have never survived," and added, "This reconfirms the fact that a genuine conservative party has definitely disappeared from this land."
He went on to predict that although the People Power Party is currently blaming the opposition and defending President Yoon, it will deny President Yoon within 100 days and change its signboard. He challenged, "People Power Party members who are confident that this will never happen should come forward, stake their political lives and positions, and make a promise to the people." Kim also emphasized, "It is no longer possible to entrust the country to the People Power Party, which has already lost its will to protect the constitution and its vision for the nation, and has degenerated into a perennial opposition party riding on violent far-right forces," concluding, "Only a change of government is the answer."
Meanwhile, the People Power Party is the seventh name of South Korea’s major conservative party since the formation of the Democratic Liberal Party on January 22, 1990, through the merger of the Democratic Justice Party, the Reunification Democratic Party, and the New Democratic Republican Party. The People Power Party has changed its name in the past during times of major setbacks such as general election or presidential election defeats, or presidential impeachment, as well as before significant elections. The current name, People Power Party, was adopted after the United Future Party, which suffered a crushing defeat in the 2020 21st general election, transitioned to a provisional emergency committee system.
