A Japanese man who made headlines after confessing to having four wives and several girlfriends has revealed that he earns tens of millions of won by sharing his polygamous lifestyle on social networking services (SNS). Previously, the man did not work and was entirely financially dependent on his wives.
According to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP) on February 8, Ryuta Watanabe, a 37-year-old from Hokkaido with four wives and eleven children, has been earning a monthly income of 1.25 million yen (approximately 1,182,000 won) since debuting as an influencer.
Watanabe currently lives with three of his wives. Since Japan does not permit polygamy, Watanabe has not legally registered his marriages with any of them. Among his wives, four children have been born, and his third wife is currently pregnant with twins. At one point, he reportedly dated sixteen women simultaneously. In addition to his wives, he is also dating several girlfriends at the same time, and he has seven children with his ex-girlfriends.
Until recently, Watanabe proudly referred to himself as a "Himo Otoko," a term for a physically healthy man who is financially dependent on women, and lived entirely off his wives' earnings.
However, after gaining fame as "the man with four wives," Watanabe began using SNS to generate income. He created accounts on various platforms and explained that "each of my three wives will be responsible for managing one account." Through these accounts, Watanabe shares his polygamous lifestyle and reportedly earns 1.25 million yen per month. He has also announced plans to establish his own company to sell clothing and hair care products.
Previously, in an interview with Japan's Shueisha, Watanabe drew attention by stating, "I have sex with my three wives more than 28 times a week." He added, "Each wife has her own room, and I take turns sleeping with them each night," and explained, "The wives share housework such as cooking, laundry, childcare, and cleaning, and get along well." He also remarked, "There is a record that Tokugawa Ienari, a shogun from the Edo period, had 53 children. I want to surpass that record by having 54 children," surprising many. Recently, Watanabe even conducted online interviews with women who applied to become his fifth wife.
Local netizens who have learned about Watanabe's polygamous lifestyle have reacted with comments such as, "What will he tell the children when they grow up?" "Not only the man, but the women must be out of their minds too," "At least he's finally started making money, so maybe that's a relief," "Whether they're wives or girlfriends, it's their own choice, so who are we to judge?" and "I can't understand any of the people involved."
