On the 11th (the 14th day of the lunar calendar's first month), Dangjin City in South Chungcheong Province announced on the 12th that it held the 2025 Jeongwol Daeboreum Gijisi Juldarigi event, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, at the Gijisi Juldarigi Museum and its surrounding area.

If Seollal is a holiday to celebrate the beginning of the year with family, Daeboreum is an important East Asian festival where members of the village community gather to hold ancestral rites, pray for abundance and peace throughout the year, and prepare for the upcoming agricultural season.

On the evening of the first full moon, it was customary in our agricultural rituals to pray to the goddess for the earth's abundance, and most Juldarigi (tug-of-war) events also took place on Daeboreum.

As a representative festival symbolizing our nation's agricultural culture and as a preliminary event for the annual Gijisi Juldarigi Folk Festival, the Gijisi Juldarigi Preservation Society holds the Gijisi Juldarigi Jeongwol Daeboreum event every year.

The event began at 11 a.m. with a general meeting, followed by ritual stepping to bless the land at Dangjudaeok, the setting up of a rice straw pole, Seonangje (village guardian ritual), and Jangseungje (totem pole ritual). In the evening, Daljipje (moon house ritual) and Daljiptaeugi (burning of the moon house) were held to pray for the health of families, the well-being of the village, and a bountiful harvest.

Koo Eunmo, president of the Gijisi Juldarigi Preservation Society, said, "We are delighted that many people came to experience our unique traditional culture, as we prepared a variety of sights and activities for the Jeongwol Daeboreum event."

Meanwhile, the 2025 Gijisi Juldarigi Folk Festival, marking the 10th anniversary of Juldarigi's UNESCO inscription, will be held from April 10 to 13 at the Gijisi Juldarigi Museum and its surrounding area in Songak-eup, Dangjin City.

The festival will feature a variety of events, including ancestral rites, a 10th anniversary commemoration ceremony, themed performances, demonstrations of domestic UNESCO-inscribed folk Juldarigi events, and the Gijisi Juldarigi itself.
