The briefing session was attended by representatives from about 10 major national shipping companies and the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) China Research Center, where they analyzed the outlook for the global shipping and port market in 2025 and shared industry response strategies amid external economic uncertainties.
They reviewed the impact of factors such as the launch of the second term of the Trump administration and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war on the global supply chain restructuring and intensified competition for transshipment cargo, and discussed corresponding countermeasures.
Last year, Busan Port handled a record-high cargo volume of 24.4 million TEU (1 TEU = one 20-foot container), further solidifying its status as a major transshipment hub in Asia.
BPA emphasized that the continuous cooperation of national shipping companies was the background of this growth and requested the key representatives of national shipping companies stationed in Shanghai to strengthen cooperation to achieve the target cargo volume of 25 million TEU by 2025.
Hwang In-jung, head of BPA China Representative Office, said, “Busan Port is establishing itself not just as a simple port of call but as a strategic hub port connecting global networks,” adding, “Through this briefing session, we shared market trends with national shipping companies and plan to discuss in depth cooperation measures to expand transshipment cargo volume and strengthen Busan Port’s global competitiveness based on the results of this briefing session.”
