This event was organized to seek solutions to overcome difficulties faced by Pohang’s key industries, steel and secondary batteries, and to listen to the voices from the challenging livelihood economy field.

At the steel companies’ meeting held in the large conference room of Pohang City Hall, about 50 participants including Mayor Lee Kang-deok, Governor Lee Cheol-woo of Gyeongbuk Province, Kim Il-man, chairman of Pohang City Council, provincial council members, related organizations, and representatives from secondary battery and steel companies attended. They shared the current status and prospects of the secondary battery and steel industries and listened to companies’ suggestions and difficulties.

In particular, the current situation of companies struggling due to the global economic downturn, decreased demand for steel and secondary batteries, and China’s low-price offensive was identified. Various support measures were discussed to overcome these challenges, including support for the introduction and operation of eco-friendly facilities, timely power supply, rapid designation of special industrial crisis response areas, support related to anti-dumping regulations and hydrogen reduction steelmaking, and improvements in R&D tax reduction support.

Following the corporate meeting, Mayor Lee Kang-deok visited Jukdo Market to inspect the livelihood field, met with local merchants including the Jukdo Market Prosperity Association, and listened to on-site difficulties. He also conducted a shopping event to invigorate the local economy.

He also attended the ‘Steel and Metal Digital Transformation Declaration Ceremony’ held at Change Up Ground, declared the digital transformation, and pledged to unite efforts to overcome the crisis in the steel industry.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “Although all conditions including steel and secondary battery companies and the livelihood economy are difficult, we will focus all our capabilities to overcome this and leap forward again. Together with Gyeongbuk Province and related local organizations, we will unite our strength and wisdom to overcome these difficulties.”

Amid the escalating crisis in the steel industry due to the U.S. policy imposing a 25% tariff on steel, Mayor Lee Kang-deok issued an appeal on the 11th, stating that this measure is expected to cause serious damage to the domestic steel industry and the overall economy, urging a joint government-wide response.
