An incident occurred at an elementary school in Daejeon where an 8-year-old student, Kim Haneul, was killed by teacher A. It has been revealed that the group IVE joined the wave of mourning.
On the 11th, a funeral hall in Seo-gu, Daejeon was set up as Kim’s mourning place. Friends from the same school and parents visited the mourning site continuously. Mourners, overwhelmed with grief, were unable to pay respects for a while and instead embraced and comforted the bereaved family. In front of Kim’s portrait, photo cards of IVE members, whom she liked during her lifetime, were placed.
In an interview with the media, Kim’s father said, "Haneul’s dream was to become a singer like IVE’s Jang Wonyoung. She loved dancing so much that she always followed the dance moves." He added, "She was a huge fan of Jang Wonyoung and never missed her performances. No matter the program, if Jang Wonyoung appeared, she would watch the live broadcast even if it meant going to bed late." He continued, "If I could ask for something, I would be grateful if the people at IVE could give a warm message to Jang Wonyoung for Haneul’s journey, if they see this."
Starship Entertainment, IVE’s agency, upon hearing this, sent condolence wreaths and photo cards to the mourning site. The wreath bore the message, "Singer IVE. Our deepest condolences to the deceased."
Earlier, on the 10th at around 4:30 PM, Kim’s parents received a call saying "Kim did not come to the academy," and reported her missing to the police. Location tracking showed Kim’s phone was in the school’s second-floor audiovisual room, where Kim and teacher A were found collapsed. The police faced difficulties in determining the initial circumstances and identifying suspects due to the absence of CCTV at the scene, but A confessed to the crime that afternoon. It was also confirmed that A purchased a weapon near the school during lunchtime on the day of the crime.
On the 11th, Yuk Jongmyung, chief of the Daejeon Western Police Station, held a briefing stating, "We plan to review the disclosure of the suspect’s personal information." However, he added, "As you know, disclosure of personal information requires the consent of the bereaved family, so we will consider this carefully." According to the Special Act on the Punishment of Specific Violent Crimes, prosecutors and judicial police officers may disclose the face, name, age, etc., of suspects who meet certain conditions. The appropriateness of disclosure is determined by the Personal Information Disclosure Review Committee.
