Pre-Testing with CU and GS25 Employees
Toss Pay 'Barcode/QR Payment' to Launch in March
Goal to Introduce 'FacePay' Within the First Half of the Year
From now on, convenient payment using only facial recognition will be possible at convenience stores.
BGF Retail, which operates convenience store CU, GS Retail, which operates GS25, and Korea Seven, which operates 7-Eleven, announced on the 12th that they will collaborate with Viva Republica, the operator of the mobile financial service 'Toss,' to introduce 'FacePay,' a facial recognition payment system, within the first half of the year.
Starting next month with Toss Pay's 'Barcode·QR Payment' service, FacePay will be gradually launched within the first half of the year.
The barcode·QR payment service is available to all Toss Pay subscribers. When purchasing products at any convenience store such as CU, GS25, or 7-Eleven, customers can present a QR code or barcode to make a payment based on the payment method registered in the Toss application (app).
FacePay, scheduled to be introduced within the first half of the year, allows users to register their face in the Toss app and make instant payments by showing their face to a dedicated terminal at the convenience store counter. Using biometric authentication technology in a touchless manner, once the face is registered for the first time, payments are immediately processed using the customer's selected method among credit card, debit card, or bank account.
The three convenience store companies will conduct pre-tests with employees before the introduction of FacePay.
Starting today, CU plans to conduct pre-tests with employees at stores near the BGF headquarters building in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. After service enhancement, FacePay will be initially applied to 30 major stores in the Gangnam-gu area in March.
On the same day, GS25 will also hold employee service test periods at GS Gangnam Store and DX Lab Store. Then, in March, they will begin customer-facing service openings at about 30 major stores.
7-Eleven plans to select first-phase operating stores in the Seoul area and prioritize the deployment of FacePay service dedicated terminals. After a service safety test period, the service will be expanded nationwide. Stores where FacePay is available will be announced through the Toss app at the start of the service.
