Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Soon-hee) is opening the ‘Gangbuk Smart Farm Cultivation Complex’ in Bukhansan Ui-dong and launching the ‘Smart Farm Center’ in Beondong. This is part of the ‘Gangbuk Smart Farm Project’ promoted by the district to address climate change and present a model for eco-friendly future food businesses.

The Gangbuk Smart Farm Cultivation Complex is established on land near the Bukhansan Ui-dong hiking trail, which was previously neglected due to unauthorized cultivation and illegal dumping issues. The district purchased this land in 2020 and, after nine months of construction starting in June last year, created a 1,592㎡ (approximately 480 pyeong) strawberry field. The plaque unveiling ceremony will be held on the 13th.

The Gangbuk Smart Farm Cultivation Complex utilizes Internet of Things (IoT) technology to automatically measure and analyze temperature, humidity, sunlight, carbon dioxide concentration, and soil conditions within the facility. Additionally, a remote control system via mobile devices has been introduced to adjust the cultivation environment in real time.

Strawberries were planted in three vinyl greenhouses, totaling 756㎡ of cultivation space. The 3,000 strawberry seedlings planted in December last year are expected to yield the first harvest in early next month. The expected monthly harvest volume is around 120 kg.

The harvested strawberries will be used for experiential education for children and youth at the Smart Farm Center, scheduled to open in April this year, and some will be sold at affordable prices through agreements with traditional markets and exemplary restaurants within Gangbuk-gu.

The district expects that through the smart farm cultivation complex and center, it will establish an eco-friendly future food business model and contribute to urban agriculture and the revitalization of the local economy.

District Mayor Lee Soon-hee stated, “The opening of the Gangbuk Smart Farm Cultivation Complex marks a new chapter in sustainable agriculture,” and added, “We will actively operate the smart farm cultivation complex and center so that residents can experience future agriculture close to home.”
