Gyeonggi-do Announces City and County Applications for 'Cultural Autonomy Revitalization Project' Until the 28th

Gyeonggi Province will hold a public contest for the ‘Cultural Autonomy Activation Project’ from the 12th to the 28th of this month.

This project was introduced in accordance with the 2022 ‘Gyeonggi Province Cultural Autonomy Basic Ordinance’ to enable residents to take the lead in creating the unique culture of their region.

The applicants for the contest are cities and counties, and they can collaborate with local cultural and artistic institutions and organizations. The contest fields include ▲Understanding Cultural Autonomy ▲Establishing Institutional Foundations for Cultural Autonomy ▲Strengthening Cultural Autonomy Capabilities ▲Activating Cultural Autonomy ▲Expanding Cultural Autonomy.

In the first year of the project, participating cities and counties must implement either ‘Understanding Cultural Autonomy’ or ‘Establishing Institutional Foundations for Cultural Autonomy.’ In the 2nd to 3rd years, ‘Activating Cultural Autonomy’ is mandatory, and in the 4th year, ‘Expanding Cultural Autonomy’ is a required task.

Cities and counties wishing to apply must submit their application forms via official documents by the 28th of this month. Gyeonggi Province will review the documents and conduct interview evaluations next month to select the final project recipients. The total project budget is 480 million KRW, with Gyeonggi Province and the cities/counties each bearing half of the cost.

Through this project, Gyeonggi Province expects to strengthen the capabilities of local cultural stakeholders and spread the cultural autonomy model to foster resident-led local cultures. Through a performance sharing meeting, cultural autonomy experiences among cities and counties will be exchanged, and excellent cases will be disseminated.

Oh Gwang-seok, Director of the Cultural Policy Division of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized, "Through the Cultural Autonomy Activation Project, we will create a sustainable local cultural ecosystem led by residents."
