Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on the 11th (local time) that Pope Francis is carrying out official duties at his residence as his bronchitis worsens.
The Pope met with a French Islamic leader at his residence, Santa Marta, instead of the official office at the Vatican Apostolic Palace the day before, and asked for understanding, saying, "I am not feeling well. I have bronchitis and cannot go out."
The media explained that in the released video, the Pope looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes, a swollen face, and labored breathing were captured.
The 88-year-old Pope has been suffering from bronchitis for seven days as of that day. However, his condition has not improved. The Pope is carrying out official duties at his residence, Santa Marta, this week as well as last week.
On the 9th, during a Mass celebrated at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, the Pope complained of breathing difficulties during his homily and stopped the homily midway. Earlier, on the 5th, during the Wednesday General Audience, an aide read the catechesis script on his behalf.
Whenever there are concerns about Pope Francis's health, some speculate about the possibility of voluntary resignation, but he has clearly stated his position on this matter.
During his visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo in February 2023, he said, "I believe the papacy is a lifelong office until death." However, in case sudden health deterioration makes it impossible to perform his duties, he prepared a resignation letter when he was inaugurated in 2013.
