The European Union (EU) announced on the 11th (local time) that it will take a direct stance against U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, issued a statement on the day expressing "deep regret" over the U.S. tariff decision and declared that "the EU will respond to the unfair tariffs imposed on it."
She added, "This will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures."
President von der Leyen emphasized, "Tariffs are essentially taxes, which are bad for businesses and even worse for consumers," and stated, "The EU will act to protect its economic interests."
According to Reuters, trade ministers from the 27 EU member states have scheduled an emergency video conference on the 12th to discuss response measures to the U.S. action.
