Shinan County to Hold 'Hongmaehwa Festival' on Imjado Island for Four Days Starting from the 28th

50,000 Hongmaehwa Trees Planted Along Major Roads of Imja Bridge

Shinan County in Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woolyang) announced on the 11th that the "1st Island Hongmaehwa Festival" will be held for four days from the 28th of this month to the 3rd of next month at the Imjado 1004 Island Tulip Hongmaehwa Garden.

Since 2021, the county has been promoting the "One Island, One Garden" policy and has declared Imjado as the "Island of Hongmaehwa." The designation of Imjado as the Island of Hongmaehwa reflects its historical value, as the renowned Joseon-era plum blossom artist Ubong Jo Heeryong spent his exile on Imjado.

Until last year, a total of 50,000 Hongmaehwa trees had been planted along major roads including Imja Bridge, at the Tulip Hongmaehwa Garden, and at the Jo Heeryong exile site (Manguumgwan).

In particular, at the 1004 Island Tulip Hongmaehwa Garden where the festival will be held, more than 2,700 plum blossom trees, including 645 Joseon Hongmaehwa trees as well as Hongmaehwa and Baekmaehwa, have been planted. Various attempts to graft Hongmaehwa onto Baekmaehwa have been made to create a rich and diverse flowering landscape for visitors to enjoy.

Additionally, a carnation camellia garden and a topiary garden have also been created. In April, visitors will be greeted by a spectacular display of colorful tulips, with a floral festival expected to unfold over two months.

Governor Park Woolyang stated, "This festival is being held focusing on a portion of the 50,000 Hongmaehwa trees. As these Hongmaehwa trees grow, the entire Imjado will be dyed red, creating a magnificent scene. As this is the first festival, we will address any shortcomings and strive to establish it as a representative festival of Shinan County."
